COURSE DETAILS
This course is for beginners and improvers who want to build real skill and confidence with watercolour. Over six weeks, you’ll learn the foundations that actually matter: controlling water, timing your strokes, layering transparently, and developing the light touch needed to bring birds to life with clarity and delicacy.
We’ll focus on form, feather texture, gesture, and the quiet precision that makes watercolour sing rather than fight you. You’ll work step by step, gaining a solid understanding of how the paint behaves so you can rely on technique instead of luck.
If you want to paint birds with subtlety, sensitivity, and confidence, this is a steady, supportive place to learn.
To register, please scroll to the base of this page and fill out the registration form. An automated email will then be sent to you with details of how to pay. Unfortunately this often ends up in Spam/Junk folders so please check there. Once payment has been made, your place on the course will be reserved.
Materials are not included.
Good paper is requisite — without it, the paint won’t behave properly, and you’ll end up frustrated. Please purchase 100% cotton, cold-pressed watercolour paper (available online or at the art shop in Sidmouth). It will make all the difference to your experience and your results. If shopping at the art shop in Sidmouth, purchase either Arches or Saunders Waterford paper, and be sure to buy cold-pressed (otherwise known as NOT paper). Cold pressed paper has a textured/rough surface. If the paper is smooth, it’s not cold pressed. You can buy a single sheet and cut it to size.
A list of materials is outlined below.

Watercolour paper
Good quality paper is essential. Cold pressed paper, 100% cotton, also known as NOT has a textured surface. If the paper is smooth, it isn't cold pressed. Single sheets can be purchased from the art shop in Sidmouth & can be cut to smaller sizes. Arches and Saunders Waterford are reputable brands.

Paints
A selection of watercolours. Cotman is a good brand for beginners, but any other brand is fine. Do ask me for advice if you need it.

Brushes
A set of pointed brushes. Royal & Langnickle brand are inexpensive, but surprisingly good. Ideally a size 0 brush (any brand) in addition to this set.

Mixing Palette
Any palette is suitable. Even an old plate will suffice.
ADDITIONALLY, a jar for water, an HB & 4B pencil, an eraser, a sharpener if needed
