Fruits in Watercolour, 7th/8th November 10-4/12-3

Spend a relaxing weekend exploring the wonderful possibilities of watercolour through the simple, beautiful subject of fruit.

Working from photos and fresh fruit, we’ll look closely at how light behaves across different surfaces — from the glossy skin of an apple to the softer gleam of grapes. You’ll learn how to suggest shine, translucency, colour variation and texture, as well as how to create convincing shadows beneath and around your fruit so that it feels solid and grounded on the page.

The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience of watercolour who would like to develop their confidence and observation skills. We’ll work through techniques step by step, with plenty of individual guidance, while enjoying the pleasure of painting alongside a small group of like-minded people.

A weekend of looking closely, painting slowly, learning together and discovering just how much character there is in an ordinary piece of fruit.

FUN, FLUFFY BIRDS IN WATERCOLOUR & PEN...21st November 10-3

Come and spend a playful day painting fun, fluffy birds in watercolour and pen.

This one day workshop is about loosening up, experimenting and enjoying the wonderfully unpredictable nature of watercolour.

Rather than concentrating on precise, highly detailed painting, we’ll explore how to let the paint do some of the work for us — allowing washes to flow, colours to mingle and unexpected marks and textures to become part of the character of each bird.

We’ll use pen alongside watercolour to add simple details, expression and definition, discovering how just a few carefully chosen marks can bring a bird to life.

Suitable for complete beginners and improvers, this is an opportunity to put perfection aside and simply play with paint.

You’ll be encouraged to experiment, try different approaches and see what happens — with plenty of guidance and ideas along the way.

No need to paint perfectly. Just bring your curiosity, your sense of fun, and a willingness to see what the paint wants to do.

Tawny Owl Illumination 5th/6th December 10-4/12-3

Discover the beauty and craftsmanship of Renaissance miniature illumination in this immersive one and a half day masterclass.

Inspired by historical illuminated manuscripts, you will create a richly detailed miniature painting featuring an ornate capital ‘O’ with a stylised Tawny Owl, using traditional materials and techniques including genuine gold leaf and gouache paints.

Throughout the one and a half days, you will learn how to apply real gold leaf, build luminous layers of gouache to create depth and a three-dimensional effect, and develop fine brushwork to bring refinement and detail to your work.

This workshop is suitable for those with some previous painting experience and for anyone who has attended one of my painting or calligraphy workshops before. It is not designed for complete beginners.

All materials are provided, including genuine 23 carat gold leaf, giving you the opportunity to experience the timeless methods used by historical illuminators.

Join me for a weekend of careful craftsmanship, traditional artistry, and the pleasure of creating your own Renaissance-inspired illuminated miniature.
