Watercolour paper
Good paper is essential for good results. Please invest in 1 large sheet of Saunders Waterford 300gsm COLD PRESSED or Arches 300gsm COLD PRESSED. 1 Sheet will be enough for this workshop, you'll have plenty left over. Cheap paper creates unnecessary frustration and unattractive results. Cold pressed paper is also known as NOT.

Brushes
Royal and Langnickle brand are cheap, but surprisingly good. Try to purchase a small range of medium to small sizes.

Watercolours
Good quality watercolours are easier to handle and produce superior results. This set is a good starter set if you are on a budget. For quality brands see Winsor & Newton (professional grade), Schmincke, Paul Smith.

Mixing Palette
Any mixing palette is fine (no link here). Even an old plate will serve very well.
FURTHER MATERIALS: a very sharp HB pencil, a 2B or 4B pencil, an eraser, a glass jar for water.
Birds In Flight Watercolour Workshop, Saturday 7th March 10-4
This one-day watercolour workshop explores the beauty, energy, and fleeting colour of birds in flight. Suitable for beginners and improvers, it’s also a natural next step for anyone who has previously attended my bird painting courses and would like to expand their skills.
We’ll focus on capturing the translucence of flight feathers, the exhilarating burst of movement as birds take to the air, and the momentary flashes of colour that appear as wings turn and light passes through them. Rather than stiff or overworked studies, the aim is to convey lightness, rhythm, and life.
Through guided demonstrations and structured exercises, you’ll learn how to suggest motion and energy using watercolour’s natural qualities — flow, transparency, and layering — without over-controlling the medium.
This workshop is about inspiration as much as technique. A chance to slow down, look closely, and respond to the sheer beauty of flight.
By the end of the day, you’ll have completed a painting and gained a deeper understanding of how to approach birds in motion with freshness and clarity.
Please see above for list of materials.
