A Painting of Nikolai Tsiskaridze

Nikolai Tsiskaridze is one of the Greats of the ballet world. He trained at the famous Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow, and is now appointed as Director of Vaganova Academy in St Petersburg – one of the most (if not, THE most) prestigious ballet academies in the world.

To view the beautiful process of creating this portrait:

This painting is the first in my series of male ballet dancers. Having trained professionally as a ballet dancer, I instinctively understand good balletic form – not just the shape of the body itself, but the ability of the dancer to create perfect form in their movement. I spend hours and hours seeking the perfect moment in time which will translate into a comprehensible ballet painting.

This painting of Tsiskaridze shows a beautiful line of movement. It is a simple pose, but therein lies the beauty. With huge space around the subject, the perfect alignment of arm and head capture a subtle gesture and pose which all ballet dancers perform probably thousands of times during their lives.
